Deep Ecology
minne retreat

Hello and thank you for visiting…
You might be wondering what Deep Ecology is and why I would add this to Bear River health’s website.  Please, let me explain…

Deep Ecology, as I understand it from reading the main authors (founder Arne Naess, Bill Devall, JoAnna Macey, George Sessions, and John Seed) is a relational attitude towards nature that does not remove ourselves from the natural world.  What is referred to as “shallow ecology” is looking at environmentalism from the prospective of fighting pollution and resource depletion (ultimately to persevere the health and affluence of people in the developed countries (Naess*).
Further, there might be the premise that life on Earth has entered its most precarious phase in history?  There are threats not only to human life, but to the lives of all species of plants and animals, even the very health of the biosphere… and why?

Hmmm…  I cannot answer that question.  However, I do believe that our current lack of experiences in nature (especially wilderness) is causing us to suffer and loose vital resilience.  I believe we can only understand this relationship by putting ourselves back into it without reserve, receiving gentle reminders and reassurances of the realities of Earth.  My experiences, that I look forward to writing about here, are my mergers with wilderness and the healing of my heart and mind.

*Arne Naess refers to the shallow (but powerful) ecological movement and the less influential Deep Ecology movement in his article “The shallow and the Deep, long range ecological movement.
